A blooming Rose

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Pete Rose is the runaway winner of the National League's rookie of the year award 60 years ago today.

Rose collects 17 of 20 possible first-place votes with two top votes going to New York Mets second baseman Ron Hunt and the other one to Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ray Culp.

Rose ends up playing 24 seasons in the majors, including five with the Phillies, before retiring in 1986 with a record 4,256 hits.

Baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti then formally retires Rose three years later, banning Rose for life after catching him betting on games.
