A landlord in Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh goes into the baseball business 66 years ago today as the school buys Forbes Field from the Pirates and then leases it back to the team for five years or until the team builds a new stadium, whichever comes first.

Turns out the Pirates become long-term tenants at Forbes Field as their new home, Three Rivers Stadium, does not open until July 1970.

The university now uses the site of long since-demolished Forbes Field for, among other things, Posvar Hall, where home plate now resides. Part of Forbes Field’s brick outfield wall remains on the site today.
