A little home cooking
Roy Campanella hits the 99th and 100th home runs of his Hall of Fame career 72 years ago today, starting in the second inning with a shot off the Phillies right-hander Karl Drews at Philadelphia's Shibe Park.
For good measure, Brooklyn’s catcher follows in the third inning with a grand slam off Drews to account for all of the runs in the Dodgers’ 5-1 victory before a Friday night crowd of 30,323 in North Philly.
Campanella hits 19 of his 242 career homers – five coming off Drews – for the Dodgers in their games in Philadelphia, Campanella’s hometown.
Overall, Campanella puts together a .538 slugging percentage at Shibe Park, easily his best total in any road ballpark during his 10 seasons with the Dodgers from 1948-57.
