About Face

After 16 seasons in the majors – 15 of which are spent with the Pittsburgh Pirates – Roy Face throws the last of his famed forkballs in the big leagues 54 years ago today, allowing two runs in two innings of the Montreal Expos' 9-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Parc Jarry.

Face, one of the game's premier relief pitchers during his time with the Pirates, is released after the game.

Face, at the age of 42, attempts a comeback in 1970 with the California Angels' Class AAA affiliate in Hawaii, but posts a 4.50 earned-run average in eight appearances and retires.

Face, now 95, still lives in the Pittsburgh area and in less than two weeks, on Aug. 26 to be exact, he will be inducted into the Pirates’ second Hall of Fame class.
