About Face

After 16 seasons in the majors – 15 of which are with the Pittsburgh Pirates – Roy Face throws the last of his famed forkballs in the big leagues 55 years ago today, allowing two runs in two innings of the Montreal Expos’ 9-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers before a Friday night crowd of 24,336 at Parc Jarry.

After the game, the Expos release Face, one of the game’s premier relief pitchers during his time with the Pirates.

Face, at the age of 42, attempts a comeback in 1970 with the California Angels' Class AAA affiliate in Hawaii – really, who wouldn’t want to make a comeback in Hawaii? – but posts a 4.50 earned-run average in eight appearances and retires.

Face, now 96, still lives in the Pittsburgh area.
