Al’s well and good
Al Chambers enjoys a terrific debut in the majors 40 years ago today as he picks up a pair of two-run singles in his first two at-bats off future Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley in Seattle’s 5-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox at the Kingdome.
Chambers, the onetime Harrisburg High star who is the first overall pick in the 1979 amateur draft, spends parts of three seasons with the Mariners before injuries derail his career.
By the way, the Seattle catcher in Chambers' debut for them in 1983 is Rick Sweet, who later becomes a longtime and successful minor league manager and leads Chambers’ hometown Harrisburg Senators to the 1998 Class AA Eastern League title.
