Back when players would bunt
Today marks the 35th anniversary of Felix Fermin’s entry into the record books for something that few realize then or remember now as the Cleveland shortstop picks up four sacrifice bunts in the Indians’ 3-2 victory over Seattle in 10 innings before a Tuesday night crowd of 12,565 at Municipal Stadium.
Fermin’s four bunts are the most in the majors since Ray Chapman, another Indians shortstop, picks up four sacrifices nearly 70 years ago to the day in another game played in Cleveland.
Fermin finishes the 1989 season with a major league-leading 32 sacrifice bunts, just as Chapman in 1919 led the majors with 50 of them.
