Call to the Hall

Long-ago Harrisburg infielders Frank Grant and Ben Taylor are elected 19 years ago today to baseball's Hall of Fame.

They are two of 17 players, managers and executives selected from a special ballot of Negro Leaguers and pre-Negro Leaguers that include four other greats from Harrisburg’s past – infielder John Beckwith, and outfielders Rap Dixon, Fats Jenkins and Spottswood Poles.

Grant plays shortstop and second base in 1890 for the Harrisburg Ponies, while Taylor is a first baseman in 1925 for the Harrisburg Giants of the Eastern Colored League.

They formally enter the Hall on July 30, 2006 along with longtime major-league closer Bruce Sutter, the pride of Mt. Joy, Pa.
