Everything is right with Lefty

Lefty Grove of the Philadelphia Athletics keeps rolling 88 years ago today as he beats the Boston Red Sox 9-4 before a sparse Thursday afternoon crowd of only 800 at Shibe Park.

The victory pushes Grove’s record to 31-3 – and an astounding 46-4 since July 25, 1930, a record that is the best 50-game streak of the 20th century.

Grove tries for his 32nd victory just three days later, but falls 13-1 to New York at Yankee Stadium in the 1931 regular-season finale.

Not to worry as Grove comes back on Oct. 1 to beat the Cardinals 6-2 at St. Louis in Game One of the World Series.

Grove pitches twice more in the 1931 Series, losing Game Three 5-2 in Philadelphia before again beating the Cardinals 8-1 at St. Louis in Game Six.

Ultimately, though, the Cardinals win the Series in seven games, depriving the Athletics a third straight Series title.
