Foul balls of the law
With future Hall of Fame catcher Ernie Lombardi running the team, a group of major leaguers that includes All-Star center fielder Dom DiMaggio builds a 24-5 lead in an exhibition game 82 years ago today in Represa, Calif.
The game, though, is called after seven innings when two of the local residents go missing.
Of course, this is a game being played at Folsom State Prison and those two residents – Elvia E. Mead and Philip Gardner – happen to be prisoners who, well, escape while the game is being played.
Seems they cut a hole in the fence at the prison.
No worries as the two inmates – both lifers from Los Angeles – are caught a few hours later.
Might have been a simple misunderstanding.
Maybe they simply are chasing foul balls.
You never know.
