“Gee, Thanks, Brooks”
Now for something to make any Baby Boomer feel a tad older, but grateful for watching him play the game: Brooks Robinson would turn 87 today if he were still with us.
Arguably, the greatest fielding third baseman in history – who passes away last September – is the subject of the iconic Saturday Evening Post portrait by Norman Rockwell, who includes himself in the 1971 work “Gee, Thanks, Brooks” as the fan in the front row biting down on his cigar.
Years later, the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer buys the 37x27 oil-on-canvas portrait during a Sotheby's auction in New York.
The cost: $220,000.
“I had to get that back home to Baltimore. It was something I always wanted,” Robinson later says. “I was the high bidder, but I became poor again.”
Robinson eventually puts up the painting for auction in 2015 with 100 percent of the proceeds going to charity.
