Hank Greenberg’s big week

Nice week back in 1946 for future Hall of Fame first baseman Hank Greenberg.

First, Greenberg 79 years ago today signs a new contract with the Detroit Tigers worth $60,000.

In todays’ money that comes to $977,000, a bargain for a player of Greenburg’s stature.

Three days after signing his new deal, Greenberg marries Caral Gimbel, the heiress to the nationwide Gimbel Department Store chain.

The marriage lasts 13 years, produces three children and more department stores before finally ending in divorce.

In between, Greenberg becomes a member of the Hall of Fame’s Class of 1956.

Worry not for either Hank or Caral.

Greenberg eventually becomes co-owner of the Chicago White Sox and later an investment banker, and is worth $50 million at the time of his death in 1986.

His former bride ends up with her fine art collection and her prized show horses, not to mention all of those department stores.
