In his first start against the Mets since throwing a perfect game against them less than two months earlier in New York, the Phillies’ Jim Bunning again is perfect – at least for a while – against the Mets 59 years ago today .

Bunning retires the first 14 Mets he faces before Joe Christopher drops a bunt single down the third-base line at Connie Mack Stadium with Philadelphia already leading 4-0.

Bunning allows only four more hits – a double and three singles – before finishing off the Mets 6-0.

In all, Bunning makes five starts against the Mets in 1964 and wins them all with complete games, allowing just four runs and 22 hits while striking out 38 in 45 innings.

For his career, Bunning really enjoys facing the Mets, going 18-11 against them with a 2.48 earned-run average during his eight seasons in the National League while posting an 88-86 record with a 3.18 ERA against the rest of the league over the same span.
