Immortalizing the Mick
A year after he passes away in August 1995, Mickey Mantle is immortalized 28 years ago today by the New York Yankees, who unveil a Mantle monument at Yankee Stadium.
The monument is the first in 47 years for the Yankees, who previously have monuments for Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Miller Huggins as well as – at the time – plaques for another 10 players, three owners and, well, a couple of popes.
As for Mantle, he is known to have both visited the monuments before home games as well as during games throughout his Hall of Fame career from 1951-68.
