Information you need to have … or maybe not
In a major league first – and you will be so glad to know this – the expansion New York Mets of 1962 and the almost-as-bad Chicago Cubs meet 61 years ago today at Wrigley Field for a game between two teams starting a series each with 100 losses for the season.
Never happens before this day in 1962.
For those who care – and, really, you know you do – the Cubs win 3-2 with the difference coming on Bob Will’s two-run, pinch-hit double in the sixth inning off Mets starter Galen Cisco.
That hit snaps a 1-1 tie and eventually lifts the Cubs’ record to 58-102.
The Mets – oh, those historically bad 1962 Mets – fall to 39-119 on their way to finishing at 40-120 for the most losses in baseball history.
This particular Friday afternoon game attracts a crowd of – count ’em – 595 fans at Wrigley.
The crowds improve over the weekend, as if they could not get any worse, with 2,870 turning out to watch the Mets win Saturday game 2-1 before 3,960 take in Sunday’s season finale that the Cubs win 5-1.
