Like father, like son
The St. Louis Cardinals visit Cuba 88 years ago today to face a team of island all-stars, whose starting pitcher is Luis Tiant.
The left-handed Tiant pitches 21 seasons in Cuba and the Negro Leagues, retiring in 1947 – seven years after his son, Luis Jr., is born and 28 years before he joins his son in Boston during the Red Sox’s run to the 1975 World Series.
That visit allows the elder Tiant the opportunity to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park.
Junior does just fine during his own career, winning 229 games over 19 seasons in the majors from 1964-82.
