National Cookie Day
In honor of National Cookie Day, we bring you Major League Baseball’s three Cookies – infielder Cookie Lavagetto, pitcher Cookie Cuccurullo and utilityman extraordinaire Cookie Rojas.
Lavagetto plays 10 seasons in the majors from 1934-47 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Brooklyn Dodgers, but misses four years of his prime to serve in the military during World War II.
Cuccurullo, who summers for part of the 1942 season in the minors with the Class B Harrisburg Senators, pitches three seasons in the majors with Pittsburgh from 1943-45.
Rojas, the enormously popular, all-everything player and five-time All-Star spends nearly his entire 16-year career in the majors from 1962-77 with the Philadelphia Phillies and Kansas City Royals.
An honorable mention goes to 2023 New York Mets pitcher Carlos Carrasco, whose nickname is, of course, Cookie.
