Not the best of days
Kip Selbach builds a fairly solid reputation of being a below-low average left fielder for the original Baltimore Orioles.
Alas for Selbach, he is really bad 122 years ago today as he becomes the first American League outfielder in the 20th century to commit five errors in one game.
Three of those miscues come in one inning – another record for futility – during an 11-4 loss to the St. Louis Browns before a Tuesday afternoon crowd of 1,390 in Baltimore.
Selbach hardly is alone in botching a play or two – or five – as the Orioles finish the game with eight errors that account for eight unearned runs to the final line of Baltimore starting pitcher Ike Butler.
As for Butler, he commits one of those eight errors on his way to finishing the 1902 season – his only season in the majors – with a 1-10 record.
The 1902 Orioles end up in last place at 50-88 and then fold, moving to New York the following season and becoming the Highlanders, who eventually change their name and become the Yankees.
