Roses are Red, the Braves feel dread

Coming off a horrific 1975 season in which they lose 94 games and finish 40½ games behind the eventual World Series champions from Cincinnati, the woebegone Atlanta Braves 48 years ago today send Valentine’s Day cards to their season ticket holders.

The card reads:

Rose is a Red, Morgan’s one, too

They finished first, like we wanted to

But last year’s behind us; we’re happy to say

Now we’re tied for first, Happy Valentine’s Day.

Turns out the Braves in 1976 are better at writing rhymes than they are at playing baseball as they lose 92 games to finish last in the National League West – 32 games behind the same Reds team of Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez that repeats as World Series winners.
