Oh, brother

Dom DiMaggio, left, with older brother Joe

Dom DiMaggio’s 34-game hitting streak comes to both a frustrating and familiar end 75 years ago today against the Yankees’ Vic Raschi before a Tuesday night crowd of 35,091 at Boston’s Fenway Park.

While his Red Sox teammates are beating up on Raschi, eventually topping New York 6-3, DiMaggio is 0-for-4 with one last chance to keep alive his hitting streak on this day in 1949.

There is hope – albeit brief – as DiMaggio, in his fifth and final at-bat with two outs in the eighth inning, sends a sinking liner into center field.

The ball appears heading for a safe landing on the Fenway turf only to have the Yankees’ All-World center fielder catch the ball at his shoe tops.

Nice catch, no hit, end of streak.

The center fielder, of course, is Joe DiMaggio, Dom’s older brother who eight years earlier in 1941 sets a major league record with his 56-game hitting streak.
