One of a kind … twice

Tom Seaver

Tom Seaver follows up Gary Gentry's one-hitter against the Chicago Cubs in the Mets' previous game at Wrigley Field with a one-hitter of his own 54 years ago tonight as New York beats the Phillies 4-0 before a Friday crowd of 6,373 at Connie Mack Stadium.

Seaver strikes out 15 with the lone hit off him coming in the third inning on an opposite-field single to right by light-hitting catcher Mike Compton,

That hit is one of just 18 Compton picks up in 1970 – his one and only season in the majors.

As for Seaver, he goes on to win 311 games in his Hall of Fame career before retiring after the 1986 season.
