Out of his comfort zone

Chuck Klein, clearly unhappy with the strike zone, finds himself ejected by plate umpire Lou Jorda after striking out to end the eighth inning of the Phillies’ 19-15 loss to the Chicago Cubs 93 years ago today at Philadelphia’s undersized Baker Bowl.

Klein is replaced in right field for the ninth inning by 42-year-old and soon-to-be-retired Cy Williams, marking the only inning Klein, then 25, misses during a 1930 season in which he bats .386 with 40 homers and 170 RBI.

Understandable why Klein, a left-handed hitter, does not want to miss any time at Baker Bowl with its short right-field wall. During his Hall of Fame career, Klein hits .395 in 581 games at Baker Bowl with 164 homers and 594 RBI. Outside of cozy Baker Bowl, though, Klein only hits .277 in 1,172 games with 136 homers and 612 RBI.
