Longtime major league pitcher Tommy John on meeting players today whose careers were saved by “Tommy John surgery,” the then-revolutionary ligament transplant procedure named for him in 1974:

“A lot people think Tommy John was the surgeon. A lot of ballplayers in this day and age don’t really follow the history of baseball. They play it and they like it, but they couldn’t tell you who played on the ’86 Mets.”
