Quote of the day: Willie Stargell

Willie Stargell during his Hall of Fame induction speech in 1988

Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman and Hall of Famer Willie Stargell on players he coaches in the late 1980s:

“Kids today all want to be superstars. They don’t want to take a backseat to anybody. Where we were brought up, we were in awe of people. I still am. Being in the Hall of Fame with people like Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Hank Aaron … I still don’t know how to put all that together. When I rub shoulders with Ted Williams and Willie Mays, I know I’m in the same fraternity, but to me they’re still a cut above.”
