Raising Cain

Sugar Cain during his time with the Chicago White Sox

Facing a Yankees lineup with seven Hall of Famers 92 years ago today, Philadelphia A’s rookie pitcher Sugar Cain allows only seven hits in an 8-4 victory over New York before a Wednesday afternoon crowd of 7,000 at Shibe Park.

Three of Cain’s four strikeouts come against future Hall of Famers Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri and Bill Dickey.

As for the great Babe Ruth, well, he only manages a single in four at-bats off the right-handed Cain with the first three ending in a groundout, popout and flyout.

Cain pitches seven seasons in the majors with the Athletics, St. Louis Browns and Chicago White Sox from 1932-38, finishing with a career record of 53-60.
