Remembering Billy Cox

Does not seem all that long ago, but Billy Cox – one of the greatest fielding third basemen in baseball history – passes away 47 years ago today in Harrisburg, Pa.

Cox, the pride of Newport, Pa., who stars in the minor leagues with the Class B Harrisburg Senators on City Island from 1940-41, is only 58 when he dies in 1978.

Cox spends seven of his 11 years in the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers with his final season coming in 1955 with the Baltimore Orioles.

Cox retires in mid-June that season – three months before future Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson makes his debut as the Orioles' third baseman.
