Remembering Hughie Jennings

Hall of Famer Hughie Jennings, the pride of Pittston, Pa., is born 155 years ago today.

Jennings is best known in the major leagues as a shortstop and manager, but he starts in the minors as a catcher.

Among the first stops on Jennings’ path to the majors is Harrisburg’s City Island, where he hits .338 in 69 games during the 1890 season.

Jennings’ teammates that summer include Frank Grant, giving Harrisburg the distinction of being the first pro team to field a pair of Black-and-White teammates who eventually would be elected to the Hall of Fame.
