Rockie road to retirement

Jim Leyland confirms he will retire at the end of the 1999 season ... of course, that is 24 years ago today, when Leyland is coming toward the end of his one and only season managing the less-than-mediocre Colorado Rockies.

Leyland stays retired for six seasons before coming back in 2006 with Detroit, where he leads the Tigers to a pair of World Series appearances before finally retiring – again, for real this time – after the 2013 season.

Leyland’s final record over 22 seasons in the majors: 1,769 victories, 1,728 losses, two American League pennants, one National League pennant and one World Series title, courtesy of the 1997 Florida Marlins.
