Running wild in Cleveland
Cleveland’s Jamey Carroll completes the final leg of a rare triple steal 16 years ago today against the Chicago White Sox at Jacobs Field.
When Chicago pitcher Ehren Wassermann tries to pick off Carroll from first base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning and gets Carroll caught in a subsequent rundown, David Dellucci breaks from third base and beats the throw home by Chicago first baseman Paul Konerko.
As Dellucci scores, Grady Sizemore goes from second to third and Carroll moves into second with the third steal.
Of course, the great mystery is why Wasserman would even try to pick off Carroll at first base with Sizemore already on second.
After the game – an 8-2 victory for the Indians before a Tuesday night crowd of 25,426 – Wasserman would not pitch again for the White Sox for another two months.
