Shoeless Joe on the move
After starting his career with the Philadelphia Athletics and then being gifted to the Cleveland Indians, Shoeless Joe Jackson makes his final move from team to team 109 years ago today.
This time, the Indians trade him to the Chicago White Sox for outfielders Braggo Roth and Larry Chappell, as well as pitcher Ed Klepfer and $31,500 – hey, who says White Sox owner Charles Comiskey is tight-fisted with his money?
Roth, in his second season in the majors, ends up leading the American League in homers with seven in 1915, but settles in to become a .284 career hitter before leaving the majors after the 1921 season.
Chappell does not even come close to that, appearing in just three games for Cleveland in 1916 and another 24 over the next two seasons with the Boston Braves before disappearing from the majors.
Klepfer pitches in all or parts of four seasons with Cleveland, going 21-16 in 85 appearances.
As for Jackson?
In five-plus seasons in Chicago, he hits .340 for the White Sox. Jackson leads the White Sox to two World Series appearances, helping win the one in 1917 and allegedly helping throw the other in 1919.
You probably heard about that 1919 Series.
It was in all the papers.
