Sorting out the details
Two weeks after they first put the players on the bargaining table, the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles 69 years ago today formally complete the largest trade in major league history.
By the time the deal is done, 17 players switch teams.
The maneuvering starts on Nov. 17, 1954 as the Orioles send pitchers Don Larsen and Bob Turley, along with infielder Billy Hunter, to the Yankees for outfielder Gene Woodling, shortstop Willy Miranda, catchers Gus Triandos and Hal Smith, as well as pitchers Harry Byrd and Jim McDonald.
As if nine players are not enough in an already large deal, the teams promise to send eight “players to be named” later on Dec. 1.
So, 69 years ago today, the Orioles ship pitcher Mike Blyzka, catcher Darrell Johnson, outfielder Jim Fridley and first baseman Dick Kryhoski to the Yankees in return for pitcher Bill Miller, infielders Kal Segrist and Don Leppert, and outfielder Theodore Del Guercio.
