The Black Sox’s brief comeback

Apparently ticked off by not getting enough money for his part and his teammates’ part in throwing the 1919 World Series, an invigorated Eddie Cicotte scatters seven hits as the Chicago White Sox win 4-1 at Cincinnati 104 years ago today.

The victory comes in Game 7 of the best-of-nine Series before a Wednesday afternoon crowd of 13,923 at Redland Field and cuts Cincinnati’s lead in the Series to 4-3.

Outfielders Joe Jackson and Happy Felsch, who – along with Cicotte and five others are accused of rigging the Series – each collect two hits and two RBIs for the Sox.

The Series, though, ends the next day in Chicago, where pitcher Lefty Williams – another indicted co-conspirator – does not get out of the first inning in a 10-5 loss to the Reds in front of a Thursday afternoon crowd of 32,930 at Comiskey Park.
