The Bull retires
After a 15-year career in the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox, first baseman-turned-left fielder-turned-designated hitter Greg Luzinski announces his retirement 39 years ago today.
Luzinski, a four-time National League all-star, finishes with 307 homers and 1,128 runs batted in.
During his four seasons in Chicago – his final four seasons as a player – Luzinski sets a White Sox record with homers in five consecutive games.
He also becomes the first player to land three homers onto the roof atop the second deck of bleachers at old Comiskey Park.
The only other players previously to twice deposit pitches onto Comiskey’s roof are Hall of Famers Jimmie Foxx and Ted Williams.
White Sox teammate Ron Kittle is among those in awe of Luzinski’s power, telling The Sporting News, “They’re going to have to start a separate record book: ‘Most home runs, roof.’ ”
Luzinski, now 73, is last seen hustling ribs and sauce at “Bull’s Barbecue” at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park.
