The flipping of Floyd
Five years after shipping him to the Florida Marlins in 1997, the Montreal Expos reacquire onetime wunderkind Cliff Floyd 22 years ago today in an eight-player trade that also brings infielder Wilton Guerrero, pitcher Claudio Vargas and $1.5 million to Montreal for infielder Mike Mordecai and pitchers Carl Pavano, Graeme Lloyd, Donald Levinski and Justin Wayne.
Floyd’s reunion with the Expos in 2002 is brief, however, as Montreal’s trade-happy general manager Omar Minaya flips him to the Boston Red Sox only 19 days later for pitchers Seung Song and Sun-Woo Kim.
Floyd plays 17 years in the majors before retiring in 2009 with 233 career homers and a World Series ring from the 1997 Marlins.
