The Izzy bat race
Israel Alcantara, then a corner infielder for the Class AA Harrisburg Senators, homers in his franchise-record sixth straight game 27 years ago today in a 6-2 Eastern League victory at Portland.
Alcantara’s streak ends the next day, leaving him one game shy of tying the minor league record of seven straight games with a homer.
Alcantara finishes the 1997 season with 27 homers in only 89 games with Harrisburg.
He spends the next decade raveling the globe, playing for a variety of teams from Reading, Pa.; Mexico, the Dominican and Korea with brief stopovers in the major leagues with Boston and Milwaukee.
