The Money man
Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Don Money misplays Steve Brye’s leadoff grounder to start the bottom of the first inning in an otherwise inconsequential game 49 years ago tonight at Minnesota’s Metropolitan Stadium.
The miscue, though, is historic.
The error – opening Milwaukee’s 10-5 loss to the Twins – is Money’s first of the 1974 season and first in his last 86 games, a span covering 257 chances.
The 257 errorless chances are the most by a third baseman in American League history.
At the time, Money also holds the National League record for most chances without an error at 162, a mark he sets in 1972 while playing with the Philadelphia Phillies.
