The Money man

Milwaukee Brewers third baseman extraordinaire Don Money misplays a leadoff grounder by Steve Brye to start the bottom of the first inning in an otherwise inconsequential game 50 years ago today at Minnesota’s Metropolitan Stadium.

The miscue, though, is historic.

The error – opening Milwaukee’s 10-5 loss to the Twins before a Wednesday night crowd of 11,599 – is Money’s first of the 1974 season and first in his last 86 games, a span covering 257 chances.

The 257 errorless chances are the most by a third baseman in American League history.

At the time, Money also holds the National League record for most chances without an error at 162, a mark he sets in 1972 while playing with the Philadelphia Phillies.
