The rarest of feats

Hard-hitting outfielder Tyrone Horne, then playing for Class AA Arkansas, hits for the rarest of cycles 25 years ago today with a solo homer, two-run homer, three-run homer and grand slam in a 13-4 victory over San Antonio in the Texas League.

Horne, then 27, ends up batting .312 in 123 games during the 1998 season with 37 homers and 139 runs batted in.

Just how rare is Horne’s feat?

Well, no one other than Horne accomplishes the feat in the first 153 years of pro baseball.

Horne finally gets company in the record book last Aug. 10, when second baseman Chandler Redmond hits for the home run cycle during the Springfield Cardinals’ 21-4 rout of the Amarillo Sod Poodles 21-4 in a Class AA Texas League game.

Chandler, 25 at the time, ends up batting .236 last season in 94 games for Springfield with 21 homers and 79 runs batted in. He is back this season in Springfield, where so far in 89 games he is batting .256 with 24 homers and 71 RBIs.
