This Bud is not for you

Noted sporting goods mogul, pitcher, manager and all-around party killer Albert Spalding meets with his players from the Chicago White Stockings 147 years ago today and tells them they must abstain from drinking adult beverages during the upcoming season if they hope to defend their National League title.

The plan does not work out quite the way Spalding plans as Chicago goes from a 52-14 record and the pennant in 1876 to 26-33 and fifth place in 1877.

Alas, all the Sox can do is cry into the beer Spalding never wants them to enjoy in 1877.

As for Spalding, he never again manages in the major leagues.
