Three of a kind

The Pittsburgh Pirates' Jeff King becomes only the third major leaguer in history – Hall of Famers Willie McCovey and Andre Dawson being the first two – to hit two homers in one inning for a second time in his career 28 years ago today.

King, seen here in an Associated Press photo, hits these two homers off John Smiley and Tim Pugh in the top of the fourth inning of Pittsburgh’s 10-7 victory at Cincinnati.

Less than nine months earlier, on Aug. 8, 1995, King homers twice off Sergio Valdez and Terry Mulholland in the top of the second of the Pirates’ 9-5 victory at San Francisco.
