Timeout for a little football
Happy 84th birthday today to longtime NFL receiver Gary Collins, the pride of Williamstown, Pa., and the University of Maryland who spends 10 seasons with the Cleveland Browns from 1962-71.
Collins finishes his career with 331 total receptions for 5,299 yards and 70 touchdowns.
He catches another 19 passes in seven career postseason games with five TDs – three coming in the Browns’ 27-0 victory over the Baltimore Colts in the 1964 NFL championship game.
Arguably, Collins’ most memorable catch – at least the one most talked about in bar bets – comes in Week One of the 1970 season as he scores the first points in Monday Night Football history.
His 8-yard TD reception from Bill Nelson in the first quarter gives the Browns a 6-0 lead over the New York Jets in a game Cleveland eventually wins 31-21.
