Trading Reggie Jackson

With free agency coming soon in 1976, the Oakland Athletics trade power-hitting outfielder Reggie Jackson, along with pitcher Ken Holtzman and minor leaguer Bill VanBommel to the Baltimore Orioles 49 years ago today for outfielder Don Baylor, and pitchers Mike Torrez and Paul Mitchell.

Jackson stays only one season in Baltimore, batting .277 with 27 homers in 134 games.

His next stop?

The New York Yankees, for whom the future Hall of Famer spends five tumultuous seasons over which he hits 144 of his 563 career homers, wins two World Series titles, has one nasty dugout shouting and shoving match with manager Billy Martin during a nationally televised game and, of course, has a candy bar named after him.

“I didn’t come to New York to be a star,” the never-shy Jackson says after joining the Yankees. “I brought my star with me.”
