John Lannan sees his major league debut with Washington Nationals abruptly end in the bottom of the fifth inning 16 years ago today as always quick-to-overreact plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt ejects the left-hander after he hits Philadelphia’s Chase Utley and Ryan Howard – both left-handed batters – on consecutive pitches in a one-run game.

Utley and Howard are the only two batters Lannan hits with pitches in 35 innings that season.

Six years later, Lannan joins the Phillies, for whom he goes 3-6 in 14 starts in 2013.
