What’s in a name?
In a bold fashion statement by their eclectic owner Bill Veeck, the White Sox announce 64 years ago today they will feature players’ names on the back of their road jerseys.
This is a major league first and continues today with nearly every team not named the New York Yankees placing names on the backs of their jerseys.
Veeck’s thinking: He wants White Sox fans watching road games on TV to be able to quickly identify their favorite players.
Of course, White Sox first baseman Ted Kluszewski does present a bit of a challenge for the team’s tailors.
