What’s in a name?
In a bold fashion statement by their eclectic and often eccentric owner Bill Veeck, the White Sox announce 65 years ago today they will feature players’ names on the back of their road jerseys.
This is a first in the major leagues and an innovation that continues today with nearly every team not called the New York Yankees placing names on the backs of their jerseys either at home, on the road or both.
Veeck’s thinking: He wants White Sox fans watching road games on TV to be able to quickly identify their favorite players.
Of course, White Sox first baseman Ted Kluszewski does present a bit of a challenge for the team’s tailors.
