Willie Mays working overtime

No one hits more career home runs in extra innings than Willie Mays, who launches 22 of them during his Hall of Fame career from 1951-73.

The last of those 22 extra-inning homers comes 54 years ago today as Mays drills a one-out homer to deep left field in the 12th inning off Philadelphia’s Joe Hoerner to lift the Giants over Philadelphia 4-3 before a Sunday afternoon crowd of 33,516 at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park.

For the 40-year-old Mays, the homer is his first ever off of the left-handed Hoerner, the 13th of his 1971 season and the 641st of the 660 he hits in a career that ends with the New York Mets in 1973.

The 1971 season also is the last one in which Mays leads the National League in any categories on offense with 112 walks and a .425 on-base percentage.
