A final milestone for an aging ballpark

The Philadelphia Phillies play the 6,000th game in the history of venerable, albeit by then deteriorating, Connie Mack Stadium 54 years ago today as they beat the New York Mets 6-1 in the first game of a Thursday night doubleheader.

The Phillies also win the second game 3-2 before a “Bat Night” crowd of 24,474 in North Philly.

The winning pitchers are future Hall of Famer Jim Bunning in the opener and Chris Short in the second game.

The 1970 season is the last for the 61-year-old stadium (nee Shibe Park), which the Phillies share with the Philadelphia Athletics from 1938-54 before the A’s move to Kansas City.

After the 1970 season, the Phillies move 10 miles to then-brand new Veterans Stadium in South Philly.
