A wild night - and early morning - in South Philly

A single by Philadelphia Phillies closer Mitch Williams in his first and only at-bat of the 1993 season beats the San Diego Padres 6-5 at Veterans Stadium 31 years ago today.

Williams’ hit ends the latest game, timewise, in major league history as the 10-inning soiree lasts until 4:40 into the following morning.

Williams’ hit – a one-out single off future Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman that scores Pete Incaviglia from second base – comes in the second game of a doubleheader that has multiple rain delays in the first game, which the Padres win 5-2.

The second game, before the remnants from a Friday night crowd of 54,617 in South Philly, does not even start until 1:26 a.m.

As for Williams, he never again comes to bat in the majors during a career that includes 17 plate appearances from 1986-97.
