No. 3 for Sandy Koufax

The incomparable Sandy Koufax pitches the third of his four career no-hitters 60 years ago today as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Phillies 3-0 before a Thursday night crowd of 29,709 at Philadelphia's Connie Mack Stadium.

Koufax, photographed here by the equally incomparable Walter Iooss Jr., strikes out 12 and walks only one in facing the minimum 27 batters.

The only Phillie starter Koufax fails to strike out is leadoff hitter Cookie Rojas.

The only Phillie to reach base – Dick Allen on a fourth-inning walk – is thrown out trying to steal second base.

All of the Dodgers’ runs come on a three-run homer by Frank Howard in the seventh inning off Phillies starter Chris Short.

Koufax needs only 99 pitches to finish off the Phillies in a game that lasts five minutes shy of two hours.

“This was the first time this season that I have been able to put everything together,” Koufax says after the game.

The no-hitter pushes Koufax’s record to 6-4 during an injury-truncated 1964 season in which he goes 19-5 with a National League-leading 1.74 earned-run average.

Alas, a sore arm keeps Koufax from pitching the rest of the 1964 season after shutting out St. Louis 3-0 on Aug. 16 in the first game of a doubleheader at Dodger Stadium.
