Under the lights in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh’s iconic Forbes Field opens in 1909, but the Pirates do not play their first night game there for another 31 years.

The historic nocturnal moment comes 84 years ago tonight as the Pirates beat the Boston Bees 14-2 before a Tuesday crowd of 20,310.

Historians in 1940 note the first hit comes in the top of the second inning a single to left by Tony Cuccinello, who promptly scores when Al Lopez follows with a double to left-center off Pirates starter Joe Bowman.

Gene Moore later leads off the top of the ninth with Forbes’ first nighttime homer off Bowman.

In between Boston’s two runs, though, the Pirates score 14 times for the easy victory.
